A Letter From the Blacktop

Hey All!

Greetings from a parking lot somewhere in Midland, Texas! I’m finally finished coughing and back on the road, headed to Chandler, AZ!

I wanted to thank everyone who sent get well wishes, and everyone who was affected by the few cancellations resulting from that awful flu. Everyone who knows me knows I don’t cancel shows lightly and I felt terrible to have to do so. I ended up coughing all day, everyday for two solid weeks! For me, that’s unprecedented. I’m glad it’s over and I can sing again!

So I’m on the bus and looking forward to a sold out crowd in Chandler. A great way to get back in the saddle. I have about a three week run of shows and then we hit our mid May break. My daughter has her 16th birthday and gets her drivers license! So, who will we drive around now!? Lots of you know how weird this will be. I’ve always known time flies, hence all the songs about time, but nothing illustrates that better than a child. We’re not ready!

On a musical note; I’ve been asked a lot about new music. If you haven’t heard, the latest CD is On Purpose, which includes a new duet with Lisa, “You Still Get to Me”. I am starting to think about what’s next though. I have some new songs written and will be writing more over the few breaks from the tour. I don’t imagine I’ll be able to get anything recorded and released in the remaining months of this year, but my manager and I have talked about releasing a single song in the interim. That may be doable even within the touring schedule.

But for now, I’m revisiting lyrics and guitar licks, just getting ready for Chandler! If you’re coming to one of the shows in the next few months, let me know what songs you’d most like to hear from the new CD. The band and I are going to work some up and you could have something to say about which ones we zero in on. Right now we’re doing “Beer”, “Stay Gone” and “Better and Worse”.

We’re getting ready to announce some more tour dates next week, so stay tuned for that!

That’s all I can think of for now. Thanks again for all the support during my flu battle. It really helped to know you were all so forgiving for the cancellations.

Many thanks,

Clint Black

Clint Black Receives Federal Grant for Music Research

Country music icon Clint Black has received a prestigious federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education to lead a team of scholars in exploring the potential existence of undiscovered music notes.

Black will work closely with the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin during this endeavor. The two-year project will employ various professors, musicians, and students from across the globe to seek out the never-before-heard notes. The project’s findings will be analyzed, compiled, and published.

“This is an unprecedented opportunity for collaboration and exchange and I’m thrilled to lead the charge,” Black says. “In all my years of singing and playing guitar, I’ve found myself thinking there must be more notes to choose from. This grant will allow us to find these new notes for all musicians and listeners alike to enjoy!”

The grant totals $386,200 over the two-year period with the remainder coming from nongovernmental sources. European funding will be provided in part by the European Commission.

Black is currently on tour and enjoys a good April Fools joke.

“The Big Interview” with Dan Rather Airs March 28th

Legendary newsman Dan Rather was in Nashville, Tennessee last week to profile country music icon Clint Black for his AXS Television show “The Big Interview.” The two spent time together at Black’s Nashville home and talked about Black’s musical and personal journey, his acting career, and marriage to actress Lisa Hartman. An intimate performance by Black from his home studio is also featured on the episode, which is slated to air March 28th.

“It was an honor having Dan to the house,” Black said. “It will undoubtedly go down as one of my favorite interviews ever – deeper than most. I talked about things I’d never even thought of sharing before. I didn’t want it to end. In fact, Dan hung around afterwards and I started asking him about his career. I’d love to get more time, turn the camera on him and hear more of his stories. What a day. Check one off the bucket list!”

“You will meet no more likable guy than Clint,” Rather said. “He’s a funny and charming guy, who I could’ve talked with all day. This was an interview that I’d been looking forward to for a long time and he did not disappoint. Great conversation and even took time to play some of his favorites for us. It was one helluva good time.”

Clint Black will be the recipient of the Stephen Bruton Award in Fort Worth, TX. The prestigious award will be presented to Black by Don Henley, on November 10th as the feature event of the 10th Annual Lone Star Film Festival in Sundance Square.

New Music Video Released for "Still Calling It News"

“Still Calling It News” was written by Clint Black and Hayden Nicholas back in 2012 “sometime around that election cycle.”  The song first appeared on Black’s 2015 album release On Purpose and “has never seemed more relevant than now,” said Black.  A satirical look at how coverage of the Presidential race has presented itself, the video for the song can now be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2OQ1mu27P8.

Clint insists that this video “shouldn’t be taken as a political statement, but rather as a way to illustrate how our focus has been steered away from the important issues facing our country today.”

The video features clips taken from numerous news broadcasts including CNN’s Anderson Cooper’s 360, FOX’s The O’Reilly Factor, ABC News, CBS News, CNN’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, amongst numerous others.

Most show just how far-flung from the policy issues coverage has veered.

“If we had the footage, we probably could’ve made an equally absurd video of the Jefferson/Adams election,” says Clint.
